Get a learner permit

Get a learner permit

Getting a permit is the first step to get your driver license. You can't get a permit at any driving school in Westchester . Most people apply for a Class 'D - Operator' permit. 1 You must be 16 or older and must apply in person at a DMV office. You do not need an appointment for the written test. No Westchester driving school  can give you a written test.

Here are the steps you need to take:

Step 1: Be prepared to take the written permit test

study the NYS Driver's Manual and take the practice tests so you can pass the test

class D and M permit tests are given in 14 languages: English, Albanian, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, French, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian and Spanish

you must get at least 14 of the 20 multiple-choice questions correct

this includes the correct answers to at least two of the four questions about road signs
if you are applying for a motorcycle permit, you must get at least three out of the five motorcycle questions correct. If you want a drivers manual, you can get that at Adrian's Driving School in Westchester

Step 2: Know what to bring to the DMV

complete this guide to make sure you have the documents and proofs of identification you need BEFORE going to the DMV

Step 3: Go to the DMVapply and pay for your permit 2
take your written test (if you fail, you can try again at no additional cost)

For quicker service, make a reservation online before visiting offices in New York City, Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, Onondaga or Albany Counties. See offices where this service is available.

Step 4: Wait up to 2 weeks for your permit to come in the mail
your permit will be valid for approximately 5 years (the exact expiration date depends on your date of birth and the date that you applied)
once you have your permit, you can move onto Step 5.

Step 5: Prepare for your road test
you must have supervised driving practice with your parent or call Adrian's Driving School or any other driving school in Westchester 3
you must take a pre-licensing course at Adrian's Driving School or a driver education course at your High School or Collage before you take your road test
you will need to follow all learner permit restrictions

Step 6: Take your road test
take your road test before your permit expires (you cannot renew a permit)
if you pass your test, the examiner will give you an interim license that allows you to drive
keep the interim license with your photo permit until your new license arrives in the mail (in about 2 weeks)
if you fail, start again at Step 5

Schedule and take a road test

an original, unexpired Pre-Licensing Course Certificate (MV-278) or a Driver Education Certificate (MV-285) 1
at least one unused test available 2
the ZIP Code for the test site - find test locations, directions and ZIP Codes

Schedule by phone: 1-518-402-2100

About the Road Test Scheduling System
it offers the earliest available dates and times at several sites near your chosen ZIP Code 3
to reschedule your test, you must cancel your appointment before you can search for a new date (you cannot have more than one appointment at a time)
tests are almost always on weekdays (only rarely do we offer them on a Saturday)
you can confirm an appointment by entering your 9-digit DMV ID Number from your learner permit (Client ID Number)

Please be on time for your test

Try to arrive up to 30 minutes before the time of your test. If you are late, the license examiner may need to reschedule.

Bring to your test

You'll need all of the following

your photo learner permit 4

glasses or contacts, if your permit indicates you need corrective lenses

your original Pre-licensing Course Certificate (MV-278) or Driver Education Certificate (MV-285), copies are not acceptable

To check for road test cancellations or relocations due to adverse weather or road construction, see cancellations, closings and delays, or call 1-518-402-2100.

Fee

The fee for up to two road tests for a non-commercial license is included in your $10.00 driver license application fee.

If you do not pass your first two tests, you must pay another $10.00 fee for up to two more tests. There is no refund if you do not take both tests.

For a road test for a commercial driver license (CDL) the fee for a single test is $40.00. See Get a CDL.

After you pass your road test
Our license examiner will give you an interim license that allows you to drive. Keep the interim license with your photo learner permit.
You will receive your photo driver license in the mail, in about 2 weeks.
If you are under age 18 and have a Class DJ, MJ or DJMJ driver license, you must obey the restrictions for junior drivers (see Graduated Driver License (GDL) Law and restrictions on drivers under age 18)

If you fail your test

Don't worry. If you fail a non-commercial license road test, your learner permit remains valid until the expiration date. If your learner permit expires before your next road test, you must get a new learner permit. See Get a learner permit.

You can schedule another road test, but you must pay additional fees if you failed your first two road tests. You will need to wait at least one day to take the test again.
